Robert has 30+ years of experience in public investment markets, on both the buy and sell-side. This work provided exposure to almost every industry found on public exchanges, and has brought him across the world to work in New York, London, Toronto, Johannesburg, and Cape Town while building relationships with regulators, corporations, and investors globally.

Robert leads Activant's research efforts and the Cape Town office, where he strives to build a team to complement Activant's investment process and build the foundation for the next generation of Activant torchbearers.

    Robert also spent 2 years as a Portfolio Manager at Merrill Lynch, managing an absolute return emerging market fund. His most senior role was head of EEMEA Equity sales globally, running 6 regional desks. He also ran New York & South African sales desks.

    As a South African markets specialist at 3 companies with different strategies, cultures and processes, Robert gained exposure to a wide range of clients, markets and areas of expertise, which deepened his industry knowledge and investment networks.

    Responsibilities

    Robert’s primary responsibilities were similar at these three different organizations, serving U.S. institutional investors on South African listed equity and debt markets. Taking these roles entailed relocating to the U.S. and transitioning to the sell-side from the buy-side. The different strategies, cultures and processes at these firms provided exposure to a wide range of clients, markets and areas of expertise, which deepened Robert’s knowledge and insights, ultimately leading to strong investment networks.

    Fleming Martin (acquired by JP Morgan), ING Barings & Deutsche Bank ran SA-focused markets desks as part of their emerging market offerings. All these desks were subsequently incorporated into larger emerging or international desks.

    Robert’s spent several years as a portfolio manager and analyst within investment organizations. He covered several markets and asset groups, gaining foundational experience and knowledge in different investment styles, strategies and markets.

    Responsibilities

    Most senior role was portfolio manager at Commercial Union. This entailed the entire investment management process from strategy formulation, asset allocation overlay and securities selection.
